Excerpts from Cathy's bibirthing of her son in 1978.

... I slept well the night before the birth and woke feeling a little weak, but in very good spirits. My mother called from Chicago around 8:00 am. We had a nice talk and then I drifted back to sleep. Around 9:00 I was half awake when I felt a trickle of water on my leg. I crawled out of bed. A great warm gush of water came pouring down my legs. I stood there with a huge grin unashamedly getting the floor wet "The baby's coming!" We called the midwives and they were excited too ...
The telephone rang nearby. "Who is it?" I asked. Then I yelled: "GET THAT PHONE OUT OF HERE!" I have to say that this was a high point in my labor -- knowing what I wanted and putting it out there. Queen for a day...
... Through my labor I learned that contractions start small, build up, and go down again like a wave. I learned to have faith that the more the feelings intensified taking me up, the sooner I'd go down. I trusted and savored the rests in between contractions...
...Finally the baby arrived on my chest. He felt warm and huge. He looked wrinkled, with a pointed head and face like a baby gorilla. The best part was his smell. I tried to touch him as much as I could... He's out! He's alive! He's a baby, of mine!
